Our Vineyard

The family vineyard selfishly takes advantage of its location at the very southern tip of the Adelaide Hills by the border with McLaren Vale. Halfway down the slope from the hills to the ocean, at 1,100 feet above the sea, our 16 acres of vines experience a whole world of environments.

At the vineyard’s peak the soil is thin, the sea breeze blows and moisture is harder to come by. The vines do it tough, living on a prayer. But at the bottom of its shallow valley, scarcely 400m away, the vines are sheltered and have soil and water to spare. They lounge on deck chairs smoking cigars.

Adding randomness to the disparate environs, five different clones of shiraz, chosen for their flavour profiles, were planted arbitrarily with no record kept of their locations – an old-world practice going back centuries. And our cooler altitude give the fruits time to fully develop their flavours.

Tending the vineyard to yield beautiful fruit that make consistently award-winning wines has been a case of harnessing its chaos.

Is it the co-fermentation of the random five clones, the magic of altitude, proximity to the sea, our north facing aspect, lingering seasons or even the 700-million-year-old soils splattered with 50-million-year-old sands? Perhaps it is the way our winemaker uses his skill to not manipulate but nurture the bounty that comes from this unique tableau, letting the vineyard sing in the bottle.

To be perfectly honest, we don’t know. But it makes a wonderful spicy Shiraz imbued with a complexity of flavours and an extraordinarily long finish. Truly something different to bring to the table.

Bring something different to the table.
